Rearranging the Physical Order of Fields in Data Files This technote explains how to rearrange the physical order of fields within data files in Superbase. It is common, when creating a file, to forget key elements of data, or to uncover a need for additional information during application development. Although Superbase allows you to add fields at any time to a file's structure, the physical layout of the fields is not manageable. Because of the flexibility of the Superbase environment, you can see your data in many different views (form, page, table, record), with many different indices. However, each of these is temporary and mainly for cosmetic purposes. The following steps show you how to permanently rearrange the order of fields in your files. Open the data file you want to rearrange (select Open from the File menu, then, File). Create a quick report (select Quick Report from the Data menu). Within the Quick Report, A. Insert the columns in the order you wish your fields to appear in your data file. Note: If your fields list is too long, leave the columns list blank and use the field selection dialog before you begin your Quick Report. B. Choose Database File as the destination for the output from your Quick Report. C. Run the report. Note: any calculations or validations done at the file level are included in structure of the new file created by this Quick Report. These calculations and validations also reference the new filename. When Superbase prompts you for a file name for the new database file, give it a new file name. Choose the file you have just created from the open file drop down box and validate that the data has been recreated properly. Choose your original file from the open file drop down box and remove it (select Remove from the File menu). Choose your new file again, and reorganize it back to the original file name (select Reorganize from the Utilities menu). Program: Superbase Versions: 2.0 Date: November 19, 1993 D Date:
